More information about our metal discs, and instructions on how to use these metal disks:

To make perfect talismans or seals just use our discs and a permanent sharpie marker, an etching pen, an engraving tool, or etching solution with resist or a resist pen. Detailed instructions below...

If you have ever sat there with tin snips and sheet metal you will definitely agree that these are worth the price!! The ones with tin snips have to be sanded afterwards as they never come out perfectly, also they get bent up as you are cutting them, and you would not believe how many little semi precious metal slivers can accumulate!

The manual engraving tool can be purchased at any decent hardware store (even the chain ones). The next step it to sketch out your design in bell point pen or pencil. Don't worry this comes off easily afterwards. The prior drawing is extremely important, even if you are a great artist, the sigils come out WAY better with a pattern. The manual etching pens are very easy to use, they are shaped just like a regular ballpoint pen. Another benefit is that no chemicals or electrical devises will have been used to create your disc. Also, it is much easier to concentrate while creating the image since their is no noise with this method.

An electric engraving tool can also be purchased at any decent hardware store. The advantage of this device is that the lines can go much deeper than with the manual engraving pens. The drawbacks are that the electric engraving tool is much more difficult to control and can cause wiggly lines until you get really good at it.

The other option is the etching solution. This can be bought any any Radio Shack (r) store. The usual use for this stuff is for etching copper circuit boards. However this stuff also works with steel, brass, copper and zinc. I have not tried it yet with silver, but it should work. The immersion times will vary depending on the hardness of the metal. 2-8 hours is about right. I will list exact times after I have taken more notes. To use etching solution, you must first apply some form of resist (material that will not be eaten through by the solution) to the areas that you wish to remain raised. REMEMBER to always apply a coat of resist (nail polish is a cheap option) to the back of the disc or it will be gone entirely!! Resist markers work great for precise detail such as is used for seals and talismans. Be sure to draw your pattern out first in ball point pen or pencil. Be sure to apply your resist darkly and heavily. Next, place your disc in the etching solution. This solution MUST be placed in a glass or plastic container, not a metal one <duh>! Also, since you will be using this near a sink most likely, be careful as to not spill any on the metal taps or drain, or anything else metal nearby. Rubber gloves must be worn for this process. Don't worry this resist is not as dangerous as it sounds, it has not harmed my plastic containers or my hands when I have accidentally spilled some. After your disc is done etching to the correct thickness that you desire, take it out of the solution and wash it off in cold water several times. To clean the resist off, use alcohol or nail polish remover. Be sure to read the etching solution label so that you can be sure there will not be any negative chemical reactions between the resist and the cleaning solution. The etched discs will become more raised the longer that you leave them in the solution. Be careful not to leave them in too long or there will be holes in your disc! To polish up your disc, you can use metal polish, toothpaste or a jewelry polishing cloth. I have also discovered that paint on resist can be purchased at art supply stores.

If you wish to wear these discs, simply punch a hole from both sides near the top with a nail and a hammer on top of a folded over towel, or use jewelers glue and a fancy clasp if you don't want a hole in the metal.
